From One Accent To AnotherFebruary 26, 2018
By Kristin Koppin, Production Designer
Hello! I’m Kristin.
Like the last few of the most recent Peepshow posters… I’m new here, too! I started at Fast Horse in mid-January as a senior production designer and I’m very excited to be a part of the team.
I’m mostly a local girl. I was born in Minnesota, but my dad was in sales, so that meant we moved around a little when I was young. I spent the first years of my life in Moorhead, Minn. Then we moved to Lewisville, Texas, a city on the outskirts of Dallas. We lived there for a few years then we moved to Advance, N.C., a sort of “if-you-blink-you-miss-it” kind of town, right outside of Winston-Salem. We lived there for a couple years and then moved back to Minnesota where we landed in Wayzata, and that’s where I grew up from 7th grade on.
One thing I collected while moving from place to place was an accent. Yep, I had the slow Southern drawl and said things like “just pickin’” and “fixin’ to.” To most Northerners, a Southern drawl is a Southern drawl, but I can tell you that there is a difference between the accents in Texas and North Carolina. While both places say things like “y’all” and have the slow drip going on, the Carolinas have a stronger twang to their accent than Texans do and tend to drawl things out a bit more. Since I lived in each of those places back-to-back, I developed an incredibly awkward mix of a Southern accent. (I cringe every time I watch old videos of myself during those times!) When we moved back to Minnesota I was in 7th grade. My classmates would gather around me before each class to ask me to say specific words just to hear my “weird” accent. It took a couple years for my twangy Southern accent to fade away and start to transition into what is now my full-blown Minnesota accent. One more to add to my collection!
Anyway, I’ll leave you with some other random things about me:
I’m not big into taking selfies — truth be told, it took me a while to find a photo of me for this post!
When I was in 9th grade my family went on a three-week whirlwind backpack trip through Europe, where we visited Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France and the Netherlands. It was a lot of countries to cram into three weeks but we had a blast together and have so many memories from that trip. My family is SUPER close and I’m fortunate that we live close to each other and we still do a lot together.
That’s me… the one awkwardly throwing the penny in the fountain well before what was supposed to be a well-timed photo op. That was probably the first and only time I was early in my life!
I’m the middle child.
I have two golden retrievers, Brinkley and Louie.
Graphic design is my second career. My first career was in photography. I co-owned a photography studio, where I specialized in portraiture and managed all of the marketing and sales for the studio.
I love winter. Like really, really love it. I love playing in the snow with my pups, skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and other fun outdoor winter activities.
I love to cook and have been told I make amazing guacamole.
