The holidays are here, in case you haven’t noticed. It’s the season of giving and thinking of others. That’s good and all, but I can’t help but think of the quote: “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take care of yourself first”.
Now, I’m not suggesting that giving isn’t important, because it is, but rather that you must also think of yourself. How are you feeling? How has life been lately? Are you taking care of yourself? It is very easy to forget to take care of yourself during the holiday season, so here are a few self-care suggestions to remind you that you are important, too.
1. Cuddle with a pet
Snuggle in their furry warmth and accept their loving kisses. Don’t have a pet? Go on a walk and I’m sure you’ll meet a dog that is willing to be snuggled; just ask their owner first for permission.
2. Take a hot bath (or a shower if you’d rather do that)
Close your eyes and try to keep your mind blank. Add some relaxing music. Maybe you could even use that nice smelling soap your aunt gave you last year that you haven’t used yet.
3. Cook up a nice meal
What’s your favorite meal? Make that; make it with lots of love. Make whatever comforts you from the inside out. And then eat it on the couch.
4. Take a nap
You don’t even have to sleep (although I would prefer to). Just get comfortable somewhere and enjoy some quiet time by yourself. Enjoy your own presence.
5. Change the sheets on your bed
Clean sheets are one of the best things in the world. You don’t even need to stop there; clean the rest of your room! You might get the best sleep ever that night.
Buy yourself something nice. It doesn’t have to be big by any means, just something that makes you feel happy. Maybe it’s new nail polish. Or a big fluffy blanket. Treat yourself.
There is always time for self-care. While doing any or all of these things, focus on your breathing and lower the expectations you give yourself. You’re doing the best you can.
