The Ultimate Coloring Contest: “Oh, You Turkey”

November 26, 2014

A 2007 Winner from the Star Tribune

From the taste of creamy pumpkin pie to the larger-than-life balloons that float across the screen during the Macy’s parade, Thanksgiving is the start of some of my favorite family traditions. While the food is always delicious (outside of a few mishaps) and the family time is forever cherished, one annual happening from my childhood sticks out a bit more than others.

Each Thanksgiving morning, I’d make my way down the stairs to find the Star Tribune freshly opened to the “Variety” section. Time for another masterpiece to be entered into the “Oh, You Turkey” coloring contest! My dad would even pick up a few extra copies of the paper so that I could start over if my coloring went awry. Sadly, my efforts were never recognized while I was eligible for competition (only children can enter), but I still can’t help but get a little excited when that blank Turkey canvas arrives.

I was amazed to learn that the Star Tribune has been holding this competition for more than 35 years, and that it draws in thousands of entries annually. Just a quick Google search pulls up an array of fun entries, and I always get a kick out of the submissions from the 0-4 age group.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to find any of my “Oh, You Turkey” artworks in my old keepsakes, but I did find some old Thanksgiving artwork from yours truly at the ripe old age of 4. Originals go to the highest bidder.

Was/is the “Oh, You Turkey” coloring contest one your family traditions?

Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels to all!
