Seniors and Surfers and Blondes, Oh My!

October 15, 2010

The other day I checked out Sony Ericsson’s latest viral effort supporting its new Xperia X10 smart phone: a series of “fauxcus” groups led by the most condescending (and brilliantly funny) moderator ever.

And as I watched him slyly berate his subjects through snide comments and “you couldn’t be more stupid” facial expressions, I found myself laughing hysterically.

Now I have to admit, in the first video I watched, I was so distracted by a trio of blondes describing how smart phones make them feel dumb, I kind of missed the point.

I concentrated a little harder on the next video in the queue, a focus group with three of sweet, toddler-aged girls. And that’s when I understood what Sony Ericsson was going for. This series of “dramatizations with actors” shows that it doesn’t matter if you’re old or young or if you fall into a stereotypical group of imbeciles. Even the least gifted among us can learn to use a smart phone as simple as the Xperia X10.

Thankfully, the remaining four videos capitalize on those stereotypes to hilarious effect. While some are better than others, none disappoint. For example, I learned the Xperia X10 allows:

  • a muscle-bound guido to find emails and texts
  • a senior citizen to use smile detection features
  • a surfer dude to find videos online
  • and a glam rocker to master video zoom

Even though I was thoroughly entertained, in the end I also learned a lot more about the Xperia X10 than I ever cared to know. (It operates Android technology!)

These are totally worth a few minutes of your time. My two favorites are below, but check them all out on YouTube.
