Last week, I crossed the 40-year threshold and officially made my journey “over the hill.” I tried to take the big day in stride and ease into middle age with some level of grace. So as I plunged into this fifth decade of life, I thought it would be interesting to find out all the cool things that share my year of birth.
For a lot of people, looking back at all the political, cultural and technological milestones from the year you were born can be kinda fun and gratifying.
Here’s what I mean:
- If you turn 30 in 2013, you were born the same year as the Internet, Mario Bros., Cabbage Patch Kids and Chicken McNuggets.
- If you turn 50, you were born the year of “I Have A Dream,” the lava lamp and the once-revolutionary cassette tape.
You know what debuted in 1973?
Nothing. Like almost literally…nothing.
Sadly, the year 1973 didn’t amount to a lot. It’s marked by our involvement in the Vietnam War, the ongoing Watergate scandal and OPEC putting the squeeze on much of the developed world with exploding oil prices. And while it would be fun to say I was born at the same time as Apple or the Minnesota Vikings or the Ferrari, I have none of those things. Well, to be fair, there are a few things – here’s a list of other quadragenarians that helped make 1973 such a super year.
